What is Jazz Sketch Pad?
"Great book! I wish I had this when I was starting out."
Rod Wells, saxophone student
Jazz Sketch Pad was created as a tool for teaching jazz improvisation, to fill a need that I felt as a teacher (see my biography).
I wanted to have a way of slowing down chords, and to be able to sit with the student, instrument in hand, and
explore a chord or mode
get a feeling for the sounds of the different notes in the chord
put them together to construct melodic lines.
Piano and guitar players can do this for themselves. Now you can, too!
What's in the CD CD playing time: 76 min.
The Jazz Sketch Pad CD contains a collection of sustained chords and pedal notes which can be played along with by all melody instruments.
The sounds are constructed from the highest quality sampled strings and other instruments to create lush pads of sound, each sustained for 45 seconds.
The result is a harmonic context and pitch reference within which you can play scales, modes, arpeggios, and most importantly, improvise.

"As a professional flutist, I am using this workbook a lot to fill in the gaps in my theory/scale proficiency. Warming up using the CD has nudged my level
up a bit and I really like how it's helping my ear.
My students really like it, saying it's a fun way to play scales."
Nora Nausbaum, flutist and teacher

The Jazz Sketch Pad book provides the most common scales and modes used with typical jazz harmonies, including the seven major modes, melodic, harmonic and
natural minor scales, and ii-V-I progressions in both major and minor.
One-page summaries of the basics of scales, modes, intervals and chords are provided for reference and explanation.
All of the scales and modes are given in twelve keys, and for C, Bb, Eb and C bass clef instruments.
Instruments with different transpostions can also easily use this book. Players of alto flute (in G) simply need to read a different track number from the one that is
playing on the CD.
Use the part of the book for C instruments, and when the CD track is playing the C pedal or is in the key of C, read the music which is a 4th higher, which is F.
